You, like many others, may be asking yourself "What is Real ID?' It's a federal law that affects how states issue driver's licenses and state ID cards, if they are going to be acceptable for federal purposes, such as entering military or federal facilities or boarding domestic commercial flights.
The Real ID enforcement date is quickly approaching. The Department of Homeland Security postponed the original enforcement date from October 1, 2021 to May 7, 2025 in response to COVID-19 and the national emergency declaration.
Having a Real ID is not mandatory, it is optional. You can get the standard driver's license/state identification card or Real ID driver's license/state identification card. Just know that if you do not get the Real ID you will need an alternate form of federally acceptable identification, such as military ID or passport, to enter federal facilities and to board domestic commercial flights.
You do not need Real ID to:
Visit the post office
Drive
Vote
Enter a hospital or federal courthouse
Apply for federal benefits
